Review is produced by Jim English, a widely published
nutritional-science and alternative health writer. Over the
last 20 years, Jim has earned a reputation for crafting solid,
well-researched articles and books covering nutritional
supplements with a special emphasis
on potential therapeutic roles for preventing illness and
enhancing health.
In 1991 Jim founded Smart Products, a pioneering
supplement company that introduced the concept of enhanced
nutraceutical
beverages that became known as "Smart
Drinks.” Designed
to boost energy, enhance mental focus and improve general
health, beverages with names such as Orbit Juice, Ginkgo
A-Go-Go and Quantum Punch rapidly spread from
San Francisco to Los Angeles, New York, Europe and beyond.
On January 17, 1992, Jim appeared on Nightline with
guest host Barbara Walters to address a number of topics,
including smart drugs, energy drinks, and cognitive-enhancing
supplements such as ginkgo biloba.
The response to Jim's appearance on Nightline
led to back-to-back appearances on NBC's A Closer Look, The
Nightly News with Tom Brokaw, CNN, Larry
King, and interviews in USA Today, The
New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Kiplinger's, Newsweek,
and Time Magazine.
In 1993 Smart Products changed
its name to Smart Basics to reflect its evolution
as a leading distributor of advanced nutraceuticals, supplements
and herbs. Smart Basics became one of the first
companies to introduce a number of advanced supplements previously
only available in Europe, including DHEA, melatonin and pregnenolone.
In addition to changing the name of the
company Jim also launched a new monthly newsletter dedicated
to covering the latest developments in nutritional science.
Along with fully referenced articles on nutrition, Smart
Basics News presented interviews with leading antiaging
and alternative health experts, such as Durk Pearson and
Sandy Shaw, and Ward Dean, MD.
In 1995 Jim created one of the first internet-based
nutritional web sites. Working with a simple text editor
(years before html editors were available), over the next
2 years Jim posted over 1,700 pages of product information,
review articles and interviews. One of the outstanding features
of the site was its extensive collection of nutritional glossaries.
By 1997 the company had garnered numerous awards and was
ranked as a top web destination for reliable information
on nutritional supplements and alternative health issues.
In 1994, at the height of the dot com bubble Jim sold Smart
Basics and became the editor of Focus on Health,
published by Allergy Research Group. Shortly thereafter Jim
accepted the position of Senior Editor of Vitamin Research
News. Working closely with renowned antiaging pioneer, Ward
Dean, MD, over the next six years Jim researched, wrote
and edited hundreds of articles and columns on nutrition,
anti-aging science and alternative medicine.
During this period Jim also collaborated with Hyla
Cass, MD, co-authoring "A
Users Guide to Ginkgo Biloba" and "A
Users Guide to Vitamin C" (Basic Health Publications,
2002). Jim also edited Dr. Cass's recent international
bestseller, "Natural Highs: Supplements, Nutrition,
and Mind-Body Techniques to Help You Feel Good All the
Time" (Penguin Putnam, 2002).
In 2004 Jim launched a new company with renowned nutritional
expert and licensed herbalist, John Steinke, L.Ac. The new
venture, Tango Advanced
Nutrition, was created specifically to introduce a number
of advanced "essence herb" formulas previously
unavailable to Western consumers. Based on traditional Chinese
herbal knowledge, essence herb formulas strengthen the body
and restore balance to offset physical declines commonly
associated with aging.
