Drugs Used To Treat Osteoporosis Not Linked With Higher Risk Of Esophageal Cancer

Although some reports have suggested a link between the use of oral bisphosphonates (drugs that prevent the loss of bone mass) and esophageal cancer, analysis of medical data from more than 80,000 patients in the United Kingdom found that use of these drugs was not significantly associated with new cases of esophageal or gastric cancer, according to a study in the August 11 issue of JAMA.

There is an urgent need to provide support to these patients and address their issues when new therapies are assessed and new treatment guidelines drawn up, according to lead researcher Professor Cyrus Cooper from the MRC Epidemiology Resource Centre, University of Southampton, in the UK.

After I was diagnosed with osteoporosis of my spine and hip at the Royal Free Hospital, London, they treated me with calcium. When they gave me a bone scan, it showed a very slight improvement, so they told me to increase the daily calcium dose. Once again, after twelve months’ treatment they gave me another bone scan showing marginal gain, but I felt my body was becoming clogged with all this calcium while showing very little improvement in correcting this condition.
